Senior Software Engineer

Kompas is a Montreal-based Proptech startup building modern property management and accounting software for real estate owners and operators. Our platform helps landlords and property managers streamline leasing, maintenance, and accounting operations — all in one place. We’re a small, fast-growing team focused on solving real problems for real estate professionals with powerful, easy-to-use software.

You’ll report directly to our CTO and help build out a robust suite of products, with complete autonomy over how it gets built.

We are a full TypeScript shop. Our front-end is a React based NextJS web application. We leverage the full power of react including memoization, context mapping and SSR where applicable. Our back-end is an ExpressJS application powered by a PostgreSQL database. We interface all our data modeling with Prisma ORM. We manage our infrastructure using Terraform and Serverless. Our primary and preferred cloud provider is AWS & Vercel.

You will be responsible for writing clean, readable, and testable code. Our primary goal is to deliver high quality and stable software.

Collaborate with the team to shape the future of our codebase by giving input into designing and implementing scalable and secure architectures. We care deeply about our engineering principles.

Utilize your expertise and experience to engage in peer review sessions, provide constructive feedback, and participate in system design discussions. As a strong senior engineer, we will often rely on you to drive the technical decisions.

Lead the complete development lifecycle of projects, starting from the initial planning phase, through development and testing, and into maintenance. This involves ensuring project milestones are met, coordinating with cross-functional teams, and driving successful project outcomes. You will have full autonomy.

• B.S. degree in Software Engineering or equivalent experience
• 4+ years relevant industry experience developing software solutions
• Proficiency in TypeScript
• Strong understanding of Frontend (React, Next) and/or Backend (Express) frameworks
• Familiarity with AWS Cloud Services
• Experience working with relational databases like PostgreSQL, MySQL, and in writing efficient SQL queries, designing database schemas, and optimizing database performance.
• Experience in optimizing application performance, identifying and resolving bottlenecks.
• Knowledge of testing frameworks and methodologies for unit testing and end to end testing.
• Experience working in an Agile development environment, following methodologies such as Scrum or Kanban, and using tools like Jira or Github Projects for project management and collaboration.
